Things You Didn’t Know About the University of Bristol
The Mystery of the “Midnight Car Move” at the University of Bristol! Who’s Sneaking It Away in the Dead of Night?
The first truly egalitarian university in the UK?!
Thought gender equality in higher education was a modern concept?
Think again! In 1876, the University of Bristol broke with tradition and became the first university in the UK to admit men and women on an equal basis! 💡
Of the first 99 students, an incredible 69 were women! 👩🎓
This was a bold and progressive move for the time. While other UK universities may have allowed women to attend lectures, most still refused to award them the same degrees as men. 😔
Although Bristol led the way in admissions, some fields “especially medicine”remained off limits to women for years. It wasn’t until 1906 that women were finally allowed to sit medical exams officially!
“Desperation Hill” where getting to class feels like an extreme sport?!
Some of the University of Bristol’s buildings and student halls are perched on steep hills just getting to class can feel like an extreme challenge!
The most iconic struggle? “Desperation Hill.”
Nicknamed by students, St. Michael’s Hill is so steep, you start questioning your life choices after five steps and your entire degree after ten!
Forget the classroom you’ll build leg strength first.
Bristol doesn’t have a traditional campus gate; instead, its buildings are scattered across hills and slopes. Finding your lecture hall sometimes feels like a treasure hunt. One wrong turn, and you’re in a classroom instead of a scenic spot or vice versa.
This “romantic kind of getting lost” has become an unavoidable part of student life!
Pioneers of Sustainability: Exploring the UK’s Greenest Universities
Sustainability isn’t just a slogan — it’s a way of life!
In 2015, Bristol was named the European Green Capital, becoming the first UK city to earn this prestigious title.
Here’s how the University of Bristol brings green living into everyday student life:
✅ Cycling over driving – Often called the “Cycling Capital of the UK,” Bristol makes biking easier than driving! The university actively promotes cycling with well planned bike lanes, countless racks, and even free repair stations across campus.
✅ Bring Your Own Cup – Students are encouraged to bring their own reusable cups to campus cafés, helping reduce single use plastic waste.
✅ Plastic-free campus – The university is phasing out plastic packaging, with vending machines offering products in recyclable containers.
✅ Green Capital Change Makers – Students collaborate with local businesses and communities to build sustainable practices and solutions for the future.
✅ Vegetarian-friendly dining – With plenty of vegetarian and sustainable meal options, the campus supports low carbon, conscious eating and students are leading the way.
At Bristol, green living isn’t just a choice it’s second nature. 💚
The Most Mysterious “Midnight Car Move” in University of Bristol History!
The Most Mysterious “Midnight Car Move” in University of Bristol History!
Back in 1962, something bizarre happened at Wills Hall a prank so strange, it still puzzles people today…
One morning, students at the University of Bristol woke up to find that every single car parked outside Wills Hall had vanished overnight!
Panic set in had they all been stolen?
But then, someone looked over at the tennis courts…
There they were every car, neatly lined up in perfect rows!
So, how did they get there?
Here’s the mystery:
✅ Option A: A group of students physically pushed the cars across the courtyard a feat of pure strength and coordination.
✅ Option B: The pranksters somehow hotwired and drove the cars one by one… without leaving a trace.
✅ Option C: Aliens. Yes aliens abducted the cars for research, then thoughtfully returned them.
To this day, no one knows for sure what really happened.
But one thing’s certain Bristol students take their pranks to a whole new level. 😄🚗👽
